Pet Food Recall

Stacy posted this information in some posts below, about the pet food recall. This info was sent out by the local Humane Society action line newsletter. So far, at least 10 pets have died from eating this tainted food. I haven't heard yet what they believe the source to be. The pets have had their kidneys damaged from the food; those who died had kidney failure.

Do any of you use the recalled brands? Only my dogs get a little bit of canned food with their dry food, and luckily, the kind I feed, Pedigree Lean, wasn't on the list. Dragon, feel free to also repost your post about human food recalls, which was fascinating.

What is so bad about all of this is that there is no way to prepare, or prevent. We are all at the mercy of others in so many respects when it comes to our--and our pets food.

"Many of you have probably heard by now… but several varieties of dog & cat food (specifically “cuts & gravy” style foods in can & pouch varieties) manufactured by Menu Foods have been recalled after several animals became ill and/or died. Menu is the leading North American manufacturer of wet pet food products sold by supermarket retailers, mass merchandise, pet specialty retailers & other resale/wholesale outlets… so this covers NUMEROUS brands."

They said this morning on the news that the problem is from wheat gluten which is protein filler for can pet food. It can from a plant in Kansas. The wheat was old and had mold in it. The list of brands is long.

My mom sent me an email about a toxic sweetener this morning. This one is bad too.

But, just remember, it's not ALL varieties of those brand names that are listed. It's only pouch and can foods, not any dry foods. Please go to the web site in Sandy's post and check each brand specifically. It will list all the recalled items by UPC number, description, size of the package, etc.

I checked mine cat food because all Larry will eat now is Kroger Pet Pride pouches. The date on the pouches is several months before the date that is being recalled. Which is good because I stock up and get several boxes at a time. The doggies get Alpo or Kibbles N Bits which were not on the list.

Dragon wanted me to share this with all of you since he cannot access the internet at work. Just an FYI!! Since we were out of town, he just found this out today.

As of this past Friday, Kroger has pulled ALL of their Pet Pride, FMV/Kroger, IAMS, Mighty Dog, and Natural Life cans and pouches. NOT JUST THE ONES IN THE INITIAL RECALL. This is NOT something that Menu Foods, the manufacturer, has sent out. This is just what KROGER has decided to do to try to protect their customers. Again, at this point, Kroger is the only store I know for sure that is doing this, and they are doing it ONLY as a precautionary measure. So, if you have ANY cans or pouches of the above listed food, regardless of the codes on the package, you can return it to Kroger for a refund. No one panic though, they are not saying that any of these items above the initial recall ARE contaminated, but they are being safe.
