The Full Monty Dragon

Well, I forgot my camera, so I didn't get any pictures of our Saturday adventure. I see Stacey brought it up below, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. And Stacey, send me some photos and I'll add them to this topic.

The Humane Society fundraiser was fun. Good tunes, great musicians. I was bidding in the silent auction on some artwork--a remake of the Beatles Abbey Road album. The fab four are crossing the street, and each had a pet walking at their feet. I really wanted it, and bid pretty high (can't say how high because The Boss didn't want to hear it, even though I didn't win it! He might read it here and then gripe to me about how I was going to pay that much, so Stacey, keep your trap shut). But I was outbid at the end, which was a good deal for my pocketbook!

Amy says the H.S. made just over $1,000.

Dinner was a good time, but a few people were late becuase of the torrential downpour that occured around 6.

The play was so funny--my face hurt from smiling and laughing so much. I think the guys who went (Flyboy and Dragon) would have rather seen women stripping and discussing stripping than a bunch of guys, but we women enjoyed it! And when they whipped out red thongs we almost died becuase of the Dragon's love of his red thong. What a hoot. Too bad it was the last night, but all the plays they put on are great, so we'll have to do it again. I think Dragon should audition for the next play!

Stacey and I went out for drinks at the Pub (upstairs at the Blackhorse) afterward, along with my coworker Jamie who came after work. It was sad, because it was Jamie's last night as a copy editor--he is moving over to reporter duties Tuesday. I will miss him because he is my adopted son and really helped me out when I started work there. He'll be a great reporter, but we'll sure miss him on copy desk!

My vacation? I was out and about almost every day and didn't get ANYTHING done around here that I wanted to: yard work and major weeding and trimming. I wanted to clean out a bunch of drawers and closets and my desk. I wanted to cook, I wanted to do a tons of other things that won't get done, so I'm a bit depressed about it all and have to go back to work tomorrow. I guess I'm somewhat refeshed because I got a break from the job, but NOT getting done what I wanted makes me feel all stressed again!

Haven't heard any updates on Brett, but as soon as I hear I will let you all know. So any ideas for a next get-together?

I've never been disappointed with a show at the Roxy. In fact, I'm taking my 4-year old (daughter, not dog) to see Aladdin at the Roxy on Saturday. Anyone care to join us? A packed theater of snotty nosed rugrats (except my kid, of course) watching a show performed by... you guessed it... more snotty nosed rugrats. Hmmm. I think I'll start taking my Excedrin now. :) Nah, I'll just look at my little girl's lit up face & the headache will disappear. That's what I'm hoping for anyway.

You must not have seen the movie "March of the Penguins". Rent the movie and get some Kleenex ready as it is a sad documentary on the life of an Emperor Penguin. It is very interesting but sad all the same. Glad I am not one of those beautiful animals. If there is a hell, being an Emperor Penguin would qualify!

Okay, Sandy... "The only way I would go to that is if I was in a coma and wheeled in." Well, my dear... that can be arranged! LOL Sandy talks big & bad about kids, but she's actually more adoring than most of my "kid" friends. (Sorry, Sandy... I don't mean to ruin your bad ass reputation). She always brings Emily little gifts when she comes over. Or, maybe she's just sucking up so my little hellion won't kick her in the shin? LOL Even Stacey when she visited my home briefly she was really good with the kids. Either that, or the two of you are just big FAKES... like your hair color??? hahahahahahaha

Ah, but Amy, you must remember--we are good with them short term, because we know we can give them back when we've had our quota!! I have a nephew that is 3 now, and I have always been great with him. But, he lives in Virginia, so I only see him once or twice a year. So, I eat him up when I do get to see him.

Hey, just because we aren't maternal, doesn't mean we can't show some signs of it when we are around kids. Believe me, if your son had been screaming his head off, I would not have been holding him. :) Most of your "kid" friends have to deal with their own hellions, so they aren't as inclined to be as "kissy pooh" to your kids as we are. Does that make sense?

So, we are NOT FAKE. And, Sandy may not have her REAL hair color, but I still do!! Thank you very much. I did find my first gray hair a few weeks ago, but it doesn't show (THANK GOD) unless I brush it out. I don't think I will be a hair coloring type. My mom was always proud of her salt and pepper, so I think I will be too. Now, don't hold me to that, cause you don't really know until you get there, do you????

K9rescue, hope you have an enjoyable and fulfilling experience at the Roxy. I can not make it to see Aladdin with you, but I will be with you in heart and soul. I hope to finish the project with the floor this weekend. When my offspring (Yes I have two little Dragons running around) were younger I loved to go to Chucky Cheese and it was a good thing that they served beer. What an exhilarating experience. Now I’m reduced to four legged varmints that pee and puke on the floor. Boy, now that is a lot of fun to clean up.

Yes, out in public, some children are out of control and should have been dealt with at home in such a manner that they would not be out of control in public. And Stacey and Sandy, I don’t want to get into an argument about your attitudes toward children. To each their own. If ya’ll don’t have the maternal instinct, that’s okay by me. I don’t fault you for that in no way.

Stacey, in order to have some salt and pepper hair, you have to have at least half of it dark. So, in the near future when your hair turns completely gray, you can’t call it salt and pepper. Each time I see you, I notice a considerable advancement in the gray hair department. You can continue to delude yourself into thinking there is only one, but the rest of us can see the truth for ourselves. It would be really cool if you could train your gray hair to come out in one spot, like Lily Munster. Hers looked sexy, don’t you think?

Skeeter, I saw the thing on the Emperor Penguins. It was most interesting and educational. But, yes, there were parts that would rip your heart out and even made me shed Dragon tears for those poor, pitiful penguins.

If we want to talk about our own personal hell, I must tell you mine. It would be having to live up north. I visited that place one time, and was glad to get back to the save haven of the SOUTH. Now, get this, while I was up there, I tried to order a country ham, egg, and cheese croissant at Burger King. They looked at me like what the hell is a country ham??? They said they had “ham”, was that the same thing?? I knew I had to get out quick!

Dragon, speaking of "up North" (Iowa to be exact) that's where hubby, kids & I are headed next Friday to visit with all of my relatives. I have a similar restaurant story. I ordered "steak & eggs" for breakfast... they gave me the biggest freakin' hamburger patty I'd ever seen in my life. I was like, "ummm, I ordered STEAK & eggs." She looked at me like I was from Mars! Don't they eat REAL steak up there? Another complaint up North? You can't get sweet tea! I mean, I thought THAT was a staple anywhere. In Colorado where my folks live if you order sweet tea they automatically reply, " you mean RASBERRY tea?" I can see where they might confuse rasberry with "sweet" since they sound almost identical, right? Uh-huh. SWEET tea, I repeat. Again, that Mars look. I should make myself a T-shirt that says, "I'm NOT from Mars. Just get me a freakin' SWEET tea." :)

As for Chuck E. Cheese, you can't put enough alcohol in my system to make that place tolerable. Pure chaos! And to top it off the food SUCKS. The least they can do is FEED us well!

Stacey & Sandy - honestly, I really don't consider myself a "kid" person... even now that I have my own & do admit to enjoying kids more than I did in my pre-kid days... but from afar. I love & adore MY kids (most of the time, but I do have moments when I think a website called Kidfinder.com might do well... you know, for those of us who are tired of potty accidents, escape artists (most of those child safety gadgets are a waste of money), incessant talking, & lack of trainability). See, dogs & kids REALLY aren't that different. My sister runs a daycare from her home. I'd rather live at Chuck E. Cheese. I don't understand how she does it... having to wipe OTHER kids' noses & butts... gag. :)

Stacey, next time you see me look a little closer. I have PLENTY of salt & pepper... I choose to color it so the gray looks like pretty highlights. :) :) :) My mom, like your mom, refuses to color her hair. My dad is pretty gray upstairs, and she doesn't want him to look or feel older than her. Everybody say, "awwwwwww!" Isn't that sweet? :)

The only place in the US that you will find sweet tea is in the south! The rest of the US does not serve sweet tea. I personally think it's gross and hate the fact that when I go out to eat I have to request unsweet tea or they will bring it to me sweet. Besides, unsweet tea is better for you. And yes the "north" does know what steak and eggs are. That must be an Iowa thing.

THEY SERVE BEER AT CHUCK E.CHEESE? Oh my gosh, there was a way to make it toterable and Fly Boy and I had no idea! oh well we promised our daughter no alcohol when we have the kids anyway so just as well.
On the gray hair thing, I only have a littbit right in the front on top but-- my hair isn't dark enough to go for the pretty salt and pepper look, it just looks dull with the gray showing so highlight all around for me. My Mother is so lucky, she has the dishwater blond color that has never been touched witha tint or color ever and there is no gray. Even if she got a gray hair with her catural color it would blend in ok. Don't know what happened with me.

On sweet and non sweet tea. Of course being from the South I grew up a sweet tea lover but--- rarely drink anything but non sweet these days. I drank a lot of tea in places without sugar so got used to it like that and I love it. I stopped drinking pop, soda, coke, or whatever you choose to call it 6 years ago and the thought of any of that is yucky to me now. Too sweet! On occasion I get a craving for sweet tea and it tastes so good but just can't do it all the time anymore. But Amy, now on that steak and eggs thing, you don't call a hamburger steak and eggs, steak and eggs, thats just not right. And like you I can see how the rasberry and sweet sound just alike too, right! But if you had worn that shirt that said get me a freakin' sweet tea they woould have brought you a rasberry tea,ha. So what your Mom and your Dad, awwwwwww how rasberry!

Amy, I can tolerate GOOD kids, and Emily has never been a brat when I was there. However, when I wrote my column about kids screeching in the background when I'm talking on the phone to friends with kids, I did have you in mind. You, however, do not zone out and start having long discussions with them like Carmen does. LOL. I like the way you ignore it, as long as they aren't bleeding or anything.

The ice tea thing: In Pa, when I was young, all my friends and I drank that lipton iced tea in a carton. But after driking good southern iced tea, I tried a sip of my old love and almost gagged! It was TOO sweet and syrupy and lemony. I like the way the Rebds do it by steeping tea bags, mixing with water and sugar. I even know how to make it! We have one of those tea machines that are like coffee makers, where you put the bags in, add water, and it's brewed--add more water, sugar and it's done!

The Boss tried to order iced tea when braved a visit to Yankeeland many years ago and the waitress looked at him like he was nuts, because it was winter. In the North, iced tea is like lemonade...a summer drink.

Steak and eggs--we have that in the north. Iowans must be idiots. What I want is a REAL Philly cheese steak which you can't find here and also a good Mom and Pop Italian pizza, not a chian pizza place. None of those here either.

In Georgia we learned real quickly if you order tea, you get sweet tea. When ordering here you say either Tea or Unsweet. Tea is sweet-tea and Unsweet is unsweet tea. During the week of the Masters Golf thing (Augusta) we ordered unsweet and the girl asked us where we were from. We said we are local and she was dumbfounded as only outsider’s order unsweet tea! I am sure she got a laugh with the other servers over us locals ordering unsweet. Strange.....

Now what is wrong with Chuck E Cheese??? Ha-ha When I was in my early 20's I worked Public Relations for Chuck E Cheese in Louisiana! I loved the pizza and the job! See, I was broke and pizza was free and the jop helped pay the bills... I ate at our Chuck E Cheese here in GA and wondered why the pizza sucked. Now I don’t care for the place.

I love well behaved kids and deplore snotty nosed whiney brats! I love all animals though… I worked in day care for about 7 years and would get compliments on how well behaved my group of kids acted in public! I had the fear of death instilled in them and it seem to work even though I never laid a hand on one of them, well one but I had his moms permission. There I was a 19 year old kid myself with 15 kids at the pool, skating rink, parks, etc and my kids were great compared to the other day care kids. I had the magic touch back then but never had kids of my own.

Sandy, how do you KNOW they aren't bleeding?? Ha! Yes, I will ignore them when I'm on the phone... or if they WON'T be ignored, I'll hang up & call back. Remember, hubby & I were childless for 12 years before we had Emily. We were the irrate couple in the restaurants or movie theaters wishing people would take their brats HOME & keep them there where they belong. As parents now, we know that isn't possible all the time. But those 12 years on our own taught us to be very considerate of others when it comes to our kids. We're very respectful of the fact that not everyone will love (or like) our kids like we do. Just don't say it to my face. LOL

On the kids, Fly Boy and I have become those peole who have hard time tolerating the ones who get whiney and act up in resturants, guess it's becaue our grand kids are good and don't act up in public. They know if they did they would get disaplined one way or another. It's the parents who don't make the kids behave in public that is the problem. If you can't control you kids in public then take them out of the situation, do not subject everyone else to thier behavior. Just tecently we were in a nice resturant for a relaxing lunch and a kid started acting up really loudly, and it got worse and worse but within 10 minutes the parent took the kid out, good parent! Sloud have been a little sooner but at least they finally did it.
Sandy, on the tea, we just brew it in our coffee maker and it doesn't pick up any coffee flavors. When we were first married I used to make instant tea and we actually liked it but after making it the way our mothers did the instant thing gagged us too so understand what you're saying.
On the Philly cheese steak, I make a pretty good home made one. Do you like the one with the Cheese Whiz or Provolone?I'm a cheese whiz person myself. And do you like it with or without? I learned that part from the cooking channel,ha. I've never heard of that pizza place, Chian?
Skeeter, we do think Chuck E. Cheese pizza is really good and enjoy it when we take the kids there.

Pam, I like whatever Philly cheesesteak you make me. I'm not picky. :) So, when is lunch?? :)

I agree 100% on the kids acting up in public comment. We were at Walmart the other day & there was a kid throwing a TANTRUM. You could hear that kid from the back of the store. It was awful. But, you know what? I was really patting myself on the back because in my daughter's 4 years with us I can honestly say she has NEVER thrown a tantrum in public. EVER. And, we've never laid a hand on her... so it's not like she's fearful that she'll get her butt beat if she does. I have really well-behaved dogs too... ask Sandy. :) And you know what, we raised them the same way we are raising our kids. Hey, don't fix what ain't broke. Right? :) There are truly SO many similarities. That's why I find it kind of amusing sometimes that some of you say your aren't maternal, because actually you are VERY maternal... otherwise you wouldn't nurture your pets as well as you do. Your maternal abilities just favor the 4-legged & furry is all. If you asked either of my sisters 10 years ago if they ever thought I would own pets OR have kids. The answer is absolutely no. But when I did... well, I don't want to sound like I'm bragging or anything... but they are like DAMN, not only did she do it but she's pretty good at it too. I think I surprised myself at how much I enjoyed caring for the dogs when they were puppies. And, I think it helped me locate that nurturing side of me... the side that had the capability of being a mom to a real live human. :) Working in child support for 3 years helped, too. It's really scary all the people out there breeding but absolutely shouldn't be. We figured we needed to do our part by contributing PRODUCTIVE members of society. And, they will be animal lovers too. BREED, animal lovers, BREED! We have to save the human race! LOL

On the cheese steak. Cheese whiz is fine and is used alot in Philly, but I prefer provolone. Where I grew up, about 90 miles NE of Philly, a cheese steak is made with fried oninons, cheese, sliced steak and a tomato based sauce, similar to spagetti sauce on a hard hogie roll, not a SOFT roll. NO GREEN PEPPERS. Every time I try to get one around here, or in my Air Force travels in other states, they call the thing a cheese steak but they want to put green peppers on it! That might be an add on option, but it's not right! Or they'll use meat chopped up like hamburger ground beef. I DESPISE green peppers more than any other food on the face of the earth! I can smell a dot of green pepper a mile away and can taste a teeny weeny sliver in anything and gag immediately!

Pam, what I meant about Pizza chains--all the pizza joints here are chains, like Dominos, Pizza Hut, etc. that you can find anywhere. I miss the mom and pop pizza joint, run by Italians with their origian homemade recipes! The best place back home growing up was a place called Enzios, the couple who ran it was from Italy and they made the best, greasy pizza in the world! Hand tossed crust, homemade sauce, good cheeses. You haven't had a good pizza until you've been up north!

Sandy believe it or not, the closest you can come to the Mom and Pop pizza place here in town is Michaels. It is local even tought they have three uh maybe four now locations. They do a Chicago style crust with thier home made sauce and it's really good although I'm a thin crust loving gal. Plus thier prices are so reasonable.
Amy,on the Philly cheese steaks I'll just have to have you guys over and make them for lunch one day. We'll have all the fixings and make them the way each of us like them best. And Sandy, we can just leave out the green peppers. I know what you mean because I'm the same way with nutmeg. To me nutmeg belongs in apple pie and other deserts but it should never never never be put into alfredo or a white ( bechemel sauce ) yet some people and resturants do that. There are two kinds of alfredo sauce, one with and one without nutmeg. the one with is just nasty to me, it ruins the taste completely! It gives it a sausagegy wierd flavor. Nutmeg does not belong in any white sauce! I really like Fazoli's overall but they ruin thier alfredo sauce by putting nutmeg in it. So I will never order that there. Olive Garden does have a great Alfredo sauce, it's yummy. Anyway girls, we can make our favorites the way we like them.

We have a great mom and pops Italian place here in Augusta called Giuseppe’s. It is the closest we have come to the thin stuff we had when in Italy! When I was in Clarksville a while back, we went to the new pizza place on Wilma by the mall. I cannot remember the name of it but I was impressed. We did the lunch buffet and it was yummy with different things on the menu and also on the buffet. I would go again but I am a pizzaholic so I love all pizza!
